It’s wrinkly and rather funny-looking. It’s like your own personal computer. But your brain is much smarter than any computer. Without it you wouldn’t be reading this. You couldn’t see it or understand it. Your brain helps you enjoy a delicious ice cream, laugh at a silly joke, dance to your favorite song, get out of bed in the morning, remember what you did yesterday and plan what to do today. Your brain helps your heart beat and your eyes blink about 20 times every minute. It does much more than we could say in this article, and many more things that we don’t know. Since your brain works so hard, would you agree it’s worth taking great care of? Here are some ways you can do that…
One of the best exercises for the brain is practice. Say you want to learn how to play guitar; every time you practice, the pathways in your brain that send messages about playing guitar become stronger. Soon you don’t have to try as hard because it seems to come naturally. The same thing happens when you practice a new language, or math, or riding your bike. If you don’t practice much, the pathways get weaker, so it takes a while to remember, and a lot more effort. Practice really does make perfect!
This one’s really simple – you don’t want to knock your brain around, so wear your seatbelt in the car, your helmet when you bike or scoot, or skateboard, and wear the right safety gear for whatever sports you play. Illegal drugs can damage your brain too. If anyone offers you drugs, just say no and walk away.
Your brain is just about the size of two fists put together, but it uses 20% of your energy. And it must be fed right if you want it to work right. You feed your brain by eating foods which the brain needs to stay healthy. You’ll be pleased to learn that some of them are quite delicious. Blueberries feed our brains so we can learn faster and remember better. Walnuts are great for your brain because they have Vitamin E, which protects the brain from damage. Isn’t it funny that they look a little like your brain as well? Eggs are great for your memory, Avocados, green veggies and salmon are all great for your brain. Your brain also needs plenty of water every day. If you don’t drink enough water, your brain is affected. You may feel moody, have trouble remembering stuff, and take longer to do normal tasks like your chores. Dehydration even shrinks your brain!
How do you feel when you don’t get enough sleep? A bit moody? Your brain needs its beauty rest, you know. When you don’t get enough sleep your reactions are slower. For example, if you’re riding your bike, you will be slower to hit the brakes if you need to stop suddenly. You’re also more likely to get upset when someone teases you, even if they’re just kidding.
